03/05 2004: The NEW top 5-10
Congratulations to DarkBorg who has rocketed up the Ladder into 4th place, pushing EDfan (myself) back to 5th and David Givoni (the ED Ladder creator) to a 6th place tie with PhilBill (another rocket up the Ladder)who is just a few points in front of Dece in 8th place. Hurricane previously in the top five has slid to 9th in the rankings and Overlander rounds out the top 10. Congratulations to the new top 5-10 and we welcome the return to playing games with Mendel and Givoni (DG)!!! Now if someone could just locate Andy. And of course Greenhell is STILL the undisputed KING of the Ladder!!

18/02 2004: Ladder scores recalculated
During the operation of any complex system (such as this ladder), small errors sometimes creep in and have to be rectified. To that end, all scores have been recalculated from the games database today. As a result, your score may have changed slightly as previously contained errors were purged. Your current score is, to the best of our knowledge, correct.
If you want to help keep the database "clean", please observe that the system is presently not programmed to catch duplicate reports. These happen when someone uses the back button in their browser to resubmit a game already reported (perhaps to add a comment that was forgotten etc.). So stay away from the back button to avoid errors that can linger until the next recalculation.
When in doubt, contact an admin.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

For the admin team
mendel

P.S. The rumors that the admin team has skimmed a small percentage off each score and transferred it to a number Swiss bank account are completely unfounded.

11/02 2004: More admins and a tournament coming up
Big things are happening on this site these days. Mendel and edfan have joined me as coadmins on the website. I have felt that some group dynamics would do the site well, getting more feedback and sharing the responsability of developing and maintaining it. Since edfan and Mendel are going to organize the coming 2004 tournament, and since I proposed to integrate it more into the site, they agreed to become admins as well.
So you will not only benefit from an enthusiastic group of people behind the ladder website now, you will also be able to test your skills in the 2004 tournament, which will be announced officially very soon.

Looking forward to working with you guys :)

/Givoni

03/01 2004: Inactive players and a bit more...
I have added a few more things to the website:
- inactive players on the ladder are shown in red, which means that they haven't finished a game within the last 3 months.
- the player data page has been divided into two pages. Now the generals statistics of wins, draws and losses are shown on the details page, as well as the highest achived rating by the player. If you want to have a detailed look at all the games played, there's a link at the bottom, that shows the whole list of registered games.

Well, I hope you all entered this new year well, and I wish you all luck...

/Givoni

05/12 2003: Greenhell on top again
Finally Greenhell has regained superiority on the ladder. He's back as #1, but will he stay there? Mendel is the only real contender since Andy, after his quick rise to the top, has stopped playing it seems. I myself am also going up, but since I still lack 90 points to get there it will take a while, even if I do go further up.
So let GH, the indisputable most-games-played-player enjoy his time on the top, and let's see if he can defend the position ;)

Good gaming everyone,

Givoni

25/11 2003: happy birthday David Givoni!!!
i thought they shot horses that got that old... everyone please come up on the chat bar a wish david a big happy birthday! thanks david for being the father of the ladder! we all owe you a great deal.

greenhell and mendel

19/11 2003: A few things added
As you can see there's now I've added a list of the newest 10 players registered at the site, and of the latest 10 games reported. I hope this will make it easier to find the new players who're probably looking for games to play, and the games list can keep you updated on what's going on since last visit.

Enjoy

/David

02/11 2003: we have a new leader

22/10 2003: new rookie!

07/10 2003: Been too busy...
These last couple of weeks have been very busy for me, and I havenīt been able to "nurse" the ladder the way I should have.
I have recovered a bit today though, responded pending emails and fixed a bug that disabled the use of the back-button on the website.
I can see that the fight for being number one is still intense, and I'm very glad that Greenhell is getting some competition on that first place.

Good luck with the games everybody,

/Givoni

23/08 2003: a new #1

01/08 2003: trillian link

01/08 2003: new work on the ladder!

david has thought up some really cool new stuff for the ladder! take a look, there's a tournament-ladder now! so to keep it up to date please make sure all your games are posted. if you use something other than ICQ your missing out on the action! try trillian if you don't want ICQ on your computer. it's AOL, MSN, YAHOO, ICQ and IRC all in one! so you don't have to give up anything. =]

31/07 2003: New features
A few new features have been added:
- now there's a separate tournament ladder, where only tournament games are listed and rating is calculated as a win = 3 points, draw = 1 point. Now go and report your tournament games, if you haven't done so already.
- I also created a ladder history graph, showing the top 15 players development from the beginning to the current date. Looks pretty nice IMHO.
- The message setup chat has been polished a bit, so that it doesn't refresh/scroll up all the time, only when there are new messages.

As always, tell me if you like or don't like it or have any other ideas...

/Givoni

30/07 2003: New co-admin
Greenhell has asked me to be co-admin on the site, mainly for posting news pieces more frequently. So from now on, you wont only have to stand watching him still being at the top of the ladder, you'll also have to read his ramblings ;-)
No, seriously, I'm happy to get some help keeping the site up-to-date and I'm sure that we'll all profit from the energy that he's putting into playing and talking about Empire Deluxe.

/Givoni

15/05 2003: BIG CHANGE in rating calculation
I found Dave "Hammer" Hamrics original live ladder page on the waybackmachine.org and decided to adopt his rating calculations instead of my own. The principle is the same, but since I tried to build my formula upon his, but without remembering it very well, I didn't get all the aspects.

Soon I'll post an explanation of the calculation, but the principle added now is that when you're new to the ladder you gain points whether you loose or not. The idea is that you get better the more games you've played, so everyone starts at 1000 points and until 1100 you always get 20 points extra, and from 1100-1200 you get 10 points extra. This means you can never go below 1000. Each game has a value of 32 points which is the maximum you can gain. And the difference counting between the two opponents is now 700 points. Well it's not very well explained here, but go to the ratingpage soon, and i'll post a decent description...
Btw this means that i have recalculated all the games, so the ladder is a bit different now...
Hope you like it!

/Givoni

13/05 2003: New instant chat
I have added a small and simple game setup chat at the bottom of every page.
After Greenhell telling me every day since the beginning, that the old chat was not good enough, I have added a simpler, but hopefully more useful one down below.
The purpose is for you to see who's around looking for a game or using it to setup the game, if you dont have ICQ.
It's small, but I hope it can fullfill it's purpose. Otherwise tell me about it...

/Givoni

09/05 2003: Rating calculator and help section
I have added some information on the game reporting system and a game calculator, so that you can check how your game results will affect your ranking. The rating calculation has also been changed a bit, since I found a small "unevenness" in the calculation.
All this can be found clicking on the new link in the menu to the left called "help".
If it doesn't help, please let me know.

/Givoni

PS: You do know that the Empire Deluxe Internet Edition was released two days ago, right?

01/05 2003: Email works again and more...
I have now added a few things and fixed the emailing problem.
- new players who have registered within the last 14 days are listed with a icon beside their name.
- the registration date is also listed on the player data page.
- a forgotten password function has been added for those of you who need a bit of help ;-)
- and I've added a couple of administration functions, that make it easier for me to delete games or reset them, when something is reported by mistake.

/Givoni

25/04 2003: Email sending problem!
I've received some reports about errors, when reporting games or creating challenges, and they all stem from the fact that the email component that I use on the site, suddenly doesn't work anymore. I suspect that it's my website-host that has changed something, but they haven't figured out what yet, so in the meanwhile I have disabled the automatic email-sending. This means that you should send an email to your opponent by yourself to draw his attention to whatever you've reported.
I'll try to solve this problem as soon as possible, and apologize for the inconveniences and errors that you've got.

/Givoni

12/04 2003: Another design
Well, to be honest, the former spicing up of the site was a bit excessive. As Max Power put it in his frank and funny comment about it: "OUCH!!! My eyes hurt..." and well, I have to admit that he was right.
I hope all the rest of you didn't get too many eye problems and that these colors are better. Anyway, as I keep saying, I'm glad to get feedback, and I try to implement as much as I can, so don't hesitate to give me your opinions.

We are now 49 players signed up here, and I'm very glad to see that life on the ladder is slowly evolving.

I have more updates in mind for this weekend, and will get back, when they're implemented...

/Givoni

05/04 2003: New design
After my wife convinced me that the design of the website was too boring, I have tried spicing it up a bit, without throwing myself into too many fancy details I can't handle. I let myself be inspired by the colors of the Empire Deluxe original logo and well, the original "old newspaper"-style that I tried to follow, is now completely gone.
Well, it's diffent and not so bad in my humble opinion.
What do you think?

/Givoni

03/04 2003: Red = action required
Whenever you have games that needs your action, accept challenge/result or review of changes made by your opponent, "My player data" in the left navigation bar will be red. This hopefully makes it easier to spot that your action is required, and where to go to respond.
As Spud suggested I have now reduced the ladder to only containing people who actually reported at least one game with a result accepted by the opponent.

Hope you like it...

/Givoni

02/04 2003: New feature!
You can now report games you've played with opponents not yet registered at the ladder.
The procedure is that you write your opponents email address instead of choosing his username, and he/she will then be registered provisionally at the website. Your opponent will also receive an email and be encouraged to login at the site to accept the game result and become a normal member.
I hope this will add the speed of recruiting new members. And as I've said before, you're welcome to register games, you've played in the PBEM tournament this year, even if it was a few months ago.

/Givoni

27/03 2003: A bug corrected!
During the last days I received a couple of reports of games being reported as draws, even though both players hadn't accepted the result. This was due to a bug in the code, and I have now uploaded a corrected version.
If you discover any other irregularities in the game reporting sequence (or elsewhere) please don't hesitate to tell me about it.
And well as I was at it, I also reduced the size of the chat window, which according to Greenhell (and common sense) was way too big :-)

/Givoni

26/03 2003: A few new features
I've added user stats and games stats in the navigation bar. The site is slowly growing in members and games are being reported and challenges sent. I'm glad to see that :-)
I have also removed the timeout in the chat, so that you wont be kicked out after 5 minutes of idling, and I've added the number of chatters in the user stats. This way you can always see if someone is hanging around looking for an opponent or someone to discuss tactics with.
The ladder has also been slightly modified, so that it now only shows the statistics of rated games, i.e. all unrated games are excluded.

'Till next update...

/Givoni

20/03 2003: The website is online
After a short testing period, I'm happy to go officially online with this first version of the Empire Deluxe Ladder.
I hope this website will inspire and ease the ED-gaming, and that you will let me know if you find any errors, have good ideas or just want to say that you like it how it is.

May Empire Deluxe last forever,

David Givoni
